All supplies called out on the pattern supply list, cut fabric pieces, extra fabric and interfacin

Steps to take before class

  • Decide which size bag to make if multiples are included in the pattern
  • Read the supply list and gather all supplies in pattern supply in pattern supply list for the size you are making.
  • Read the general instructions at the beginning of the pattern; this is where seam allowances and stitch lengths are called out, among other things. It can also helpful to read through the entire pattern to get general idea of how the bag goes together.
  •  Cut out paper pattern pieces.
  •  Cut out fabric, interfacing, stabilizer, webbing, etc. using paper pattern pieces or cut sizes provided in the pattern. Some pattern pieces are cut on the fold, the pattern piece will indicate if the edge is to be placed on the fabric fold.
  •  Interface and/or stabilize all pieces according to the pattern. It is often helpful to leave the stabilizer(foam, fusible fleece, batting), out of the top seam allowance. Interfacing the entire piece, if called out in the pattern, is ok. If in doubt about stabilizer, that step can be done in class.

Class progression

  •  Instructor will show any pattern modifications made to the demo bag and how to do those, if desired.
  •  Participants read through the pattern and proceed through each step at their own pace. Instructor will
help with understanding the steps when necessary.
  •  Instructor will provide helpful tips throughout the class as participants reach those stages.
Miscellaneous

  •  Most bag patterns are mid- to advanced beginner, so some basic sewing knowledge is helpful.
  •  Don’t use an iron on waxed fabrics; finger pressing is the best option for opening seam allowances, folding, marking, etc.

Waxing tips
  • Cut out pieces to size and then apply wax. Most fabrics don’t shrink from waxing, but it can be helpful to wax a small test piece if there’s any doubt.
  •  Interface cotton or thin canvas prior to waxing; most canvas does not require interfacing prior to waxing.

  • Rivets and other hardware can be added to most patterns if desired for decorative purposes as well as added strength.
  • Some hardware may require a small tool to install, check for required tools and bring them if needed
  • Many patterns call for polyester thread, which is generally preferred for domestic machines; any kind of thread can be used though, so use what you have.
